【英文 Essay】Describe a person who left a lasting impression on you / My Idol

“If I fail, I try again, and again and again. But I want to tell you it’s not the end. Just because you had failed once doesn't mean you're going to fail at everything.” The quote, yet motivational and inspirational, is always echoing on my mind. Born without four limbs for no medical reason, he knew from an early age that he was different. He faced more obstacles and discrimination than many of us, but eventually he had achieved success. He showed the world that there still have hopes and meaning in life. He did leave impression on me for his values. Who is this extraordinary person? He is my true idol, my true hero, even my hope. He is Nick Vujicic.

Nick Vujicic is an Australian Christian evangelist and motivational speaker born with a rare disorder characterised by the absence of all four limbs. When he came to this world, he was unfortunately classified as “disabled”. Unlike other active and lively children, he could not be like them. Sometimes, he was often teased by the children for being different. He once contemplated committing suicide at one point in his life, but luckily he didn’t. Out of curiosity, he asked his parents about his birth. Several days before he was born, there was no notification from either doctor or nurse that something was wrong with the baby. However, when he was born, there was a silence among the nurses. At first, his mother refused to see him or hold him when the nurse had him in front of her, but she and her husband tried to accept it and tried to understand God’s plan for their son through a strong faith in God.

Nick Vujicic is a very perseverant man. There were a lot of worries from his parents when he was a child, but he proved and showed that he could be like a normal child. Even though his mother gave him a cushion to support himself, he overcame all sorts of hardship and taught himself how to stand up with a method by leaning his forehead over the wall and slowly standing up. Originally, he was born with combined two toes. His parents decided to have an operation for him to separate those toes so that he could use them as fingers to grab, turn a page, write articles and as many useful functions. Although the operation didn’t go as well as they wanted, he tried to adapt using these freed toes and got an electronic wheelchair, a computer, and a cell phone to free him even more so. There is no denying that his childhood was truly an “amazingly normal childhood”.

Nothing is impossible. Just like Nick Vujicic said before, “Take small steps in the right direction. No matter how small your steps are, keep moving forward towards your goal.” Although he did struggle for a long time due to his disability, he stepped up and did his best to tough it out. When his mother showed him a newspaper article about a man dealing with a severe disability, he was touched by the man and started to give talks at a prayer group at the age of seventeen. After four years, he successfully graduated from Griffith University. Subsequently he became a motivational speaker, travelling internationally and focusing on teenage problems. Having addressed over three million people in almost 57 countries on five continents, he speaks to corporate audiences, congregations and schools. He impresses me for being impossible as a disabled person.

Nick Vujicic promotes his work mostly through television shows and through his writing. He marketed a motivational DVD, Life's Greater Purpose, a short documentary filmed in 2005. His first book, Life without Limits, was published in 2010. He gives life advices to his readers. For instance, he advocates that the way to find hope even in the harshest situations is to have a light-hearted discussion, and you will become tough in any situation so that you can keep living your life the way you want. He advises readers to hold onto hope so that it cannot disappear, be able to accept danger and be thankful to God. Apart from that, his main goal is to share God’s love for his readers. That’s why his every speech and talk is ended with a warm hugging session. This shows the tremendous spirit of affection towards others.

Nick Vujicic has no arms and no legs but he exemplifies goodness in human beings. Nick reaches out beyond himself, supporting love and hope in others. So many of us are able-bodied, but are paralyzed in our own lives. He did it, successfully leaving a long lasting impression on me. A disabled is not disabled, they are normal person who are created incompletely by the God. Nick Vujicic is my real idol, a firm and indomitable idol ever.
